Gardner's theory of multiple intelligences

Reading Bloom’s taxonomy reminded me of Gardner’s theory of multiple intelligences. Gardner states that we as humans hold seven major intelligences (some now state up to nine) and that “all seven intelligences are needed to productively function in society” (Gardner & Hatch, 1989).

I believe that Gardner’s theory would tie in well with the roles and responsibilities of the teacher librarian. By focusing on multiple intelligences instead of solely upon the verbal and mathematical intelligences a teacher, taking this approach, would require a greater range and variety of resources. This may include maps, songs, plays, poems and novels to name a few. In my view a collaborative teacher librarian would be priceless in assisting to obtain such resources, information and knowledge.

In my opinion Gardner’s theory can facilitate a deeper understanding of the subject material through a constructivist approach that allows greater student access and flexibility in learning.
